Automated guided vehicles must reliably avoid collisions with obstacles in the path of travel, such as protruding or floating objects. The ifm ODS collision detection system combines a PMD 3D camera with intelligent software and supplements the obligatory laser scanner to monitor the travelling area in three dimensions and also detect higher obstacles (e.g. forklift tines, high-speed doors, crane hooks).
The three-stage collision warnings take speed and steering angle into account to avoid unnecessary braking and ensure optimum protection during all driving manoeuvres.
