Jose Ribamar Ferreira Barros, popularly known as Comandante Barros was born in Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil, in the late 1930s. Today at age 72 is one of the most respected artists of Maranhao, and held several exhibitions of his sculptures made of metal, representing nature through animals and folklore of Maranhao, through the characters of Bumba-Meu-Boi.
