Graphite electrodes, made primarily of graphite, possess many unique properties and a wide range of applications. Applications: 1. Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking • Graphite electrodes are key components in the electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking process. Graphite electrodes generate an arc in the EAF, converting electrical energy into heat to melt raw materials such as scrap steel. Graphite electrodes can withstand the heat of the high-temperature arc, and their excellent electrical conductivity ensures stable arc combustion. For example, graphite electrodes used in large EAF steelmaking plants can reach diameters of 600-700mm and lengths of several meters, meeting the needs of large-scale steelmaking. 2. Submerged Arc Furnace Metallurgy • In submerged arc furnaces, graphite electrodes are used to smelt metals and alloys such as ferrosilicon and ferromanganese. The arc heat generated by the graphite electrodes melts the ore and also acts as a reducing agent in the reaction. For example, in a ferrosilicon submerged arc furnace, the graphite electrodes react at high temperatures with substances such as silicon dioxide in the ore to produce ferrosilicon alloys. 3. Electrolytic Industry • In electrolytic industries such as aluminum electrolysis, graphite electrodes can be used as anodes. During the electrolysis process, graphite electrodes can withstand corrosion from the electrolyte, and their good electrical conductivity ensures smooth current transfer. For example, in aluminum electrolysis production, graphite anodes conduct current into the electrolyte in the electrolytic cell, reducing aluminum ions to aluminum metal at the cathode. 4. Resistance Furnace Heating • Graphite electrodes can also be used as heating elements in resistance furnaces. When current passes through the graphite electrode, the resistance of the graphite generates heat, which is used to heat the material in the furnace. For example, in some graphitization furnaces, the graphite electrode itself acts as a heating element, heating the material in the furnace to the graphitization temperature.
