DTF printing process | DTF transfer is performed
Step 1: Print on film
Insert the PET film into the printer tray.
Click Print.
The inkjet printer will "print directly to film", transferring the image onto PET film.
Be careful when removing the print from the paper tray and don't stain it!
2. Sprinkle with powder
The step is to apply a hot melt powder on a film with a printed image.
You have to apply powder while the print is still wet!
Make sure and sprinkle the powder evenly.
Typically, you'll place a tray next to the printer, sprinkle power over the web print, and swing back and forth until it covers the wet ink. Then carefully shake off the excess.
Another option is to use an automatic shaker that can be used in a busy custom t-shirt shop.
Step 3: Melt the powder
As the description indicates, your next step is to melt the powder into place.
The most common method is to place the DTF transfer directly to the membrane in the oven for about 2 min.
Or if you are already doing DTG or vinyl or white toner printer transfer in custom t-shirt business, you can use a heat press machine. Just make sure you're hovering and don't put any pressure on it. Or the top of the media does not touch the transfer at all.
There is no dedicated time and temperature for solidified DTF transfer. It's best to check with the manufacturer!
Step 4: Pre-press the t-shirt
Of course, it doesn't have to be a T-shirt. However, no matter where you plan to transfer DTF, it should be completely smooth. Any wrinkles will appear on the print!
Perhaps more importantly, it dries the material completely. You'll be surprised how much moisture the fabric absorbs from the air, which can affect print quality.

Once you've done the direct-to-film transfer, you don't need to use it right away. Like most other types of transfers, they are well stored. That's why so many small businesses focus on selling transfers themselves! If you want to know which DTF printer to buy? Check out the link.
A PET film with an image and a melted powder is placed on a pre-pressed material in hot pressing. You can then hot-press the transfer onto the shirt as you would any other shirt, following the current manufacturer's instructions.
Unlike throwing a screen-printed shirt into a tunnel dryer, this process is usually recommended to cost less than £30.
Step 6: Strip DTF transfer
DTF uses cold PEEL. 100% of the time.
Therefore, after hot pressing on the shirt, set it aside until the fabric and transfer are completely cooled.
If you're making a series of shirts, you can iron them all one by one and wait until they've all cooled down before starting peeling.
When it cools, the hot melt acts as a binder, combining the colored pigments in the ink with the fibers of the fabric.
After the film cools, peel off the transfer, leaving the desired design!
Step 7: Go directly to the film finishing machine
This is an optional step, but you should definitely do it on every piece of clothing.
Like white toner printer transfers, DTF requires one last print to truly extend the life of the printer. It greatly improves the washing "fastness".
Usually, you only need to spend an extra 10 to 15 seconds on the last step.
DTF (Direct to Film) has no sublimation restrictions – it cannot be applied to cotton – or DTG – and cannot be printed onto dark polyester.
