Dimethyl ether (English: dimethyl ether, molecular formula: C2H6O, indicative formula: CH3OCH3, DME), also known as methyl ether and methoxymethane, is the simplest aliphatic ether. It is a derivative of the dehydration condensation of two-molecule methanol. It is a colorless, non-toxic, slightly ether-flavored gas or compressed liquid at room temperature. It is an important organic chemical product and chemical intermediate.
Dimethyl ether has excellent combustion characteristics, high cetane number, and less pollution, no damage to the atmospheric ozone layer, and is easily degraded in the troposphere. It can be widely used as a fuel for automobiles.
Dimethyl ether can be used as a propellant, foaming agent, solvent, extractant, etc. for aerosols. High concentrations of DME can be used as an anesthetic.
It is also used in refrigerants as an alternative to freon.
