Vehicle manufacturers are continually developing new vehicle body designs that challenge the functionality of traditional fuel tank apparatus. The current “toilet float technology” depends on a mechanical float and arm, prone to damage and inaccuracies. To provide better accuracy, Schrader’s new all-electric fuel-level sensing technology measures fuel volume by sending a radio frequency (RF) signal into the fuel tank, thus creating a more precise and accurate reading. This new technology has no moving parts to fail or cause errors.<br><br>Flex-Fuel Sensors<br><br>Over the last few decades, flex-fuel vehicles have become increasingly popular because of their positive environmental impact and high gas mileage. Schrader’s flex-fuel sensor uses a patented technique to detect critical electrical properties in fuel, including ethanol concentrations of flex-fuel mixtures. The sensor can then accurately provide that information directly to engine control systems in real-time. Additionally, because high-ethanol fuel burns at a different temperature and rate than typical automotive gasoline, the sensor allows engine control systems to adjust dynamically as ethanol concentrations change.<br><br>Making use of the fact that the fuel in the tank acts as an electrical load to the series resonant circuit, an RF signal is radiated into the fuel tank. Our innovative directional antenna with intelligent compensation software allows the system to then give a linear output directly proportional to the fuel volume in the tank.
