Description
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate, or EDTA, is a widely used chelating agent for divalent cations such as Ca⁺². It can inhibit metal ion-dependent proteases such as calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. EDTA also acts as a chelator of zinc ions, inhibiting metalloproteinases that require zinc for activation. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate was used with Na2HPO4 and citric acid to prepare Na2EDTA-McIlvaine buffer. An aqueous solution of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has also been used as a chelating agent for photocatalytic hydrogen production of divalent cations. It has an inhibitory effect on enzymes that require divalent cations to be active, such as metalloproteinases.
