Description
The Umutina/Balatiponé is an indigenous group that inhabits the right bank of the Paraguay River, in the city of Barra do Bugres - State of Mato Grosso, where the Umutina Indigenous Area is located, with 28,120 hectares.
In this territory reside 453 indigenous peopledivided into two villages. In the bakalana village live 53 people and in the central village, Umutina, 400 people live.
With their own denomination, they recognize themselves as the Balatiponé people, which means new people. The community's economy is based on fishing, craft production and the commercialization of the surplus of some products from family swiddens.
Biojewelry are produced mainly with seeds found in umutina territory, and usually executed by women. These seeds originate from plants native to the region, which are harvested once, or twice a year and are stored for use throughout the year, which makes it possible to generate models that are produced only by Umutina artisans.
