1. Basic characteristics of vermiculite Layered mineral: formed by weathering or hydrothermal alteration of biotite or phlogopite, monoclinic system, scaly aggregate Color and luster: yellow-brown, red and white, with oily or pearly luster. Lightweight and porous: density is only 2.4~2.7 g/cm³, and the bulk density drops to 80~200 kg/m³ after expansion, and the porosity is more than 90%. High temperature expansion: when heated to 800~1000℃, the volume expands 15~25 times (up to 40 times), forming a honeycomb structure. Thermal insulation: after expansion, the thermal conductivity is extremely low (about 1/4 of river sand), and the temperature resistance reaches 1100℃. Sound absorption and sound insulation: the sound absorption rate of 5mm thickness is 63%, and 8mm can reach 90%. Water absorption and fertilizer retention: 500~650 liters of water per cubic meter, high cation exchange capacity (100~260 mmol/100g), slow release of potassium, magnesium, iron and other elements. Strong weather resistance: antifreeze (no cracking at -30℃), alkali resistance, antibacterial, service life of 3~5 years. 2. Main uses of vermiculite 1. Fireproof materials in the construction and industrial fields: used for fire walls and fireproof coatings, the back temperature is only 40℃ at a high temperature of 1100℃. Insulation and sound insulation: made into lightweight concrete, insulation boards, and pipe sheaths to reduce building energy consumption. Industrial fillers: used for brake pads (enhanced heat resistance), coatings (anti-precipitation), and rubber (lightweight filling). 2. Soil conditioner in agriculture and horticulture: adjust soil pH (7~9), increase air permeability and water retention, and prevent compaction. Seedling medium: sterile and non-toxic, promotes root growth, and is often used for cuttings and soilless cultivation (3~6mm particles are recommended). Fertilizer carrier: absorbs nutrients and releases slowly to reduce the risk of fertilizer damage. 3. Environmental protection and other applications Pollution adsorption: treat oily sewage or radioactive wastewater (adsorption efficiency exceeds 90%). Cold preservation and antifreeze: used for cold storage and annealing furnace lining to prevent condensation. Daily necessities: hot pack filler, fragrance carrier (to extend the fragrance diffusion time).
