Description
With over 110 million tons of annual production (2021/22 crop), Brazil is the third-largest corn producer in the world, following the USA and China. Both genetically modified (GMO) and non-genetically modified (non-GMO) corn are produced, with GMO corn comprising about 90% of the total. Summer and winter harvests are possible in Brazil's most important cultivation areas.
Approximately one-third of the total annual production is exported. Corn is differentiated for human or animal consumption. The main importing countries of Brazilian corn are from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The increasing exports reflect the Brazilian agribusiness's ability to raise production volume at a pace exceeding domestic consumption and at competitive prices in the international market. This achievement was possible due to productivity gains and the expansion of second-crop corn cultivation, associated with high investments in machinery, soil fertilization and amendment, genetic improvement, and adaptations in planting periods.
