The botanical characteristics of chilote garlic are very similar to those of common garlic except that, perhaps because it is a hexaploid (48 chromosomes), the plant presents a much more robust general appearance, with a greater size, a greater width and length of leaves, a very large bulb, with ± 6 bulbs of great size and other small, and a long floral scape with a large umbel with white to purple flowers. The flowers rarely form seeds and, when they form, they would be sterile, so it spreads through the bulbils or teeth.
